Mashup

The purpose of my mashup (Modern Manners) was to comment on how completely different social etiquette is now vs. what it was just around a half a century ago. I chose to use Lady Gaga's video Telephone to mashup with my 1950s audio because she is currently at the forefront of today's pop culture; she could even be seen as the icon for crazy behavior that is deemed (mostly) acceptable.

My justification for fair use is the same as what I did in regards to transforming the material. In no way was the Telephone video trying to show how to interact with others on a day-to-day basis (at least I hope it wasn't since that would promote poisoning people...), but the audio I took from the 1950's instructional video was all about manners and how they can help you live a good life. I don't believe it could ever be said that I took either one of these two mediums and used them for any other purpose than to comment on society and how what is deemed socially acceptable has changed.

  1. This was great! Very effective - and a little disturbing. So much for cultural progress.

  2. Wow!!! This is amazing! I love how the video was put together and I would definitely say it follows the guidelines of fair use. It changed the message of both videos used. There isn't anything that I would really change about this video to make it more effective either.

  3. Very very well done! I love the idea and you did a really good job putting it all together! All of your content together brings a totally different meaning to the Lady Gaga Video.

  4. Awesome.
    Your point was well made!
You used great clips for each manner reference, lol.

Your video made me think about an old B&W interview I saw. Someone was asking men on the street if they liked Marilyn Monroe's newest movie, or whatever. It was right after the famous skirt footage (with it blowing up). Most of the men said she was obscene and crude. Today, that sort of thing (the skirt) would be "no big deal." I mean...nowadays, we have people involved in pornography endorsing products and being featured in Hollywood movies.

  5. Nice job,
i really like lady gaga so, that's good.
and it definitely feels different when you are watching this video vs when you watch the regular music video (i never before thought about whether or not lady gaga is teaching us "good" things or not, because i just think she is so cool)
i love the critique that lady gaga has bad manners, because, like yeah she totally does. and i think she would think that complaint is really funny.
