Fair Use

The fair use law is very important to someone who an avid media producer. For example, we are making a mashup for this class. Fair use comes into play because we are using the material we borrowed for educational purposes. It is much easier for any person to upload a video without stressing about copyright laws. The fair use law is protecting those who want to be creative and make something completely new out of an existing piece of work. I thought it was very interesting how the video said that if the mashup created was made to start a discussion then fair use is a line of defense. They are right; it is connecting people from all over the world and putting all of their opinions together. Why should something like that be prosecuted? So much of what is out on the internet is copyrighted material whether it’s a video of a guy sitting in his room playing a popular song on his guitar or any of the mashups we have looked at in the past week, it’s everywhere. The people who made these videos were trying to prove a point and knew that others would view their work and most likely comment on it. In order to make their point, they may have had to use material that has been copyrighted, but the fair use law allows this to happen.

I was watching a lot of the mashup examples that Bettina gave us and my favorite one by far was the Mary Poppins one because I know that obviously that movie is not scary, even a little bit so it was very funny to me. I found one that was kind of similar to it and it involves Toy Story. It is basically the same idea as the Mary Poppins video, but I really enjoyed it! Here is the link!
